Hey folks. The teacher in me wanted to share a quick demonstration on how to lay some 4 inch pipe. I am not a master by any means and I would imagine this guide could help anyone lay larger pipe, but alas, mine is only 4 inches. The good news is, well, I have two 4 inch pipes! More on this later.

This guide should be especially helpful for our younger members, those who might have A) never laid pipe or B) kind of laid pipe. This applies to both our male and female members, because obviously in this day and age, we can all lay pipe if we choose.

Ok, here we go:

Step 1 - Find a hole for your pipe

In order to find a hole for your pipe, you gotta know what size pipe you are working with. Here is my pipe, don't laugh, I am sensitive.

This is the most challenging part. A hole will not just walk up to you and say, "Hey man, wanna lay some pipe in me?" If it does, that hole has most likely been dug out already, many many times. Try to avoid holes that have been 'pre-dug' if you can. They are costly on the back end and occasionally up front.

So Colby, what should I do then? Scout and Dig my friends, Scout and Dig.

Find a nice quiet place with very little competition. You do not want other roots, stones or wires getting in your way. I would share some pictures of ideal places, but those vary all across the world. Figuring out where the hole you want to dig is usually takes the longest out of all steps. It can be frustrating, just keep looking. There is a hole out there for everyone's pipe, be patient.

Step 2 - Test your hole

When testing your hole, a slow dig is best. Go slow, be gentle, praise it. Try to get it to the depth you want, but do not just go all out. If you dig your hole too fast, you will be exhausted way before either you or your hole finish. I don't care how good your cardio is, you will get tired before your hole is properly finished.

Here is a pic of me digging slowly, but you can tell by my stance, and grunty face, that I am all in

Now I like my hole to be about 10 inches deep. Yes, I know...I only have a 4 inch pipe. But here is the thing, you never want the hole to be too shallow, it's bad, trust me. With a deeper hole, you can find all sorts of other shit to stuff into it. I even like to shove my tiny stones into the hole.

This is the perfect depth hole for me

Ok, finally, before fully committing your pipe, you have to test it out. I call this "pre-piping".

Be careful when you pre-pipe. If you look carefully you will notice I DO NOT HAVE MY PIPE WRAPPED UP YET. Do NOT leave that pipe in the hole too long when it is UNWRAPPED

Step 3 - Decide if you want to fully commit

Guys, this is the point of no return. Ask yourself, do I keep digging? Is this worth it? Should I pull my pipe out and run?

I have decided to continue laying my 4 inch pipe. But remember when I said I had two 4 inch pipes? I do! In my mind, I have given this hole 8 total inches of pipe. You can think whatever the fuck you want, this is my pipe and my hole. It's 8 inches.

Notice though, I still have not fully committed myself. No wrapper on my Pipe means we are nowhere near done.

You should be exhausted, sweaty, flushed, out of breath, etc. by now. Oh and in the picture below, I am holding a magical tool. THE EXTENDER. Many a would be pipe layer has used this bad boy to get those extra few inches in. They work wonders.

Oh and if you encounter these critters inside your hole, do not worry. They are great to have in your hole. Do not listen to your 7th grade health teacher. Worms are good.

at this point I am ready to FULLY Commit. I am happy with my hole, my pipe has gone in quite easily. Nothing bad has happened and the hole sure isn't complaining.

MOTHERFUCKING BEES!!!! A nice little nest, up in the gutter. Stung on the forearm and back of the neck. Son of a bitches.

Yeah

Break in the action for some medical attention. Injuries happen when laying pipe

Although injuries happen, you have to bounce back. Finding a suitable hole for your pipe is rare, don't let an injury sideline you for long or the job is over. And you might never get hired again.

Ok, Step 3 was deciding to commit or not. If you bailed at step 3, stop reading. I however, did not. I went to step 4. ALL IN BABY

Step 4 - ALL IN, Don't stop till that hole is completely filled.

Now I warned you. If you are going all in, WRAP your pipe. An unwrapped pipe will get all sorts of bad shit in it, and once that happens, you are in trouble.

This is what a wrapped pipe looks like

I can usually wrap my pipe just fine all by myself, but for some reason this time, I could not. Now pipe laying can be a family function. In this case I had my 70 year old mother help me wrap my pipe up tight. Don't judge Oh, just for the record. I am actually laying this pipe for my mother. It's complicated.

Now I told you, when putting a 4 inch pipe into a 10 inch hole, you have room for other shit. Most holes will actually appreciate other things being shoved inside them. If you look closely, you can see my tiny little stones in the bottom of the hole. I shoved them straight up in there

Keep working the pipe into the hole. Make it fit if you have to. Mine had plenty of room. Monitor the side walls of your hole. If you start hitting them you can do some damage. Holes don't like that and it can damage your pipe.

Whew! Ok, sorry. I got a little overzealous during step 4 and forgot to take incremental pictures.

On to the next step

Step 5 - The Cover Up!

This is important. You must leave your workspace almost exactly as you found it. Try and leave no traces that you were there. If you do, and a leak springs up 9 months later, you will be held responsible.

Now you might say, "Colby you rookie, you left footprints, they can find you." Let me take this one step further. I put on someone else's shoes. Different size and all. Pro-tip there for ya.

I hope that has helped anyone in need of Pipe Laying Guidance. Do not forget the 5 steps. They have kept me safe for 44 years and I have only sprung 1 leak. He is 16 now.

The guide is complete, I am exhausted. If I smoked I would smoke. Instead, it's nap time.

Thanks for the guide. The last time I tried to lay pipe that deep, I got put on a list and am no longer allowed 10 miles near any homes (depots). I'm gonna' try with my mom instead.

All I can say is that your mom sure looks like she knows how to handle a pipe.... I think she should write the next guide.
